An afterimage is a negative image formed after looking steadily at an object for a time. The bright portions of the image cause light adaptation of the retina while the dark portions cause dark adaptation. In other words, areas of the retina that are stimulated by light become less sensitive while areas that are exposed only to darkness gain in sensitivity. If you then move your eyes away from the scene and look at a bright white surface, you see exactly the same scene that you had been viewing, but the light areas now appear dark and vice versa.
