Physical evidence can help establish the elements of a crime and thus function as corpusdelictievidence. However, it is not necessary that physical evidence be present in order for a crime to occur. Physical evidence can be used to make associations among crime scenes, perpetrators, victims, and tools. This is the most common role of physical evidence. Physical evidence can function as corroborativeevidence and thereby support other evidence in establishing a fact in question. Physical evidence may serve an identification function. It can be direct or circumstantial in establishing a fact.
