Briefly describe the consequences of early maturation for adolescent boys and girls
What will be an ideal response?
For boys, early maturation is largely a plus. Early-maturing boys tend to be more successful at athletics, more popular, and have a more positive self-concept. The downsides for early maturation in boys include increased difficulties at school and a greater likelihood of becoming involved in delinquency and substance abuse. Overall, though, early maturation seems to benefit boys. The story is a little different for early-maturing girls. Early-maturing girls may feel uncomfortable and different from their peers due to the obvious changes to their bodies. In addition, they may endure ridicule from less mature classmates. There are some plusses, though. Early-maturing girls may be more sought after as potential dates, and this may enhance their self-concept. Cultural norms and standards regarding how women should look play a large role in how girls experience early maturation.
