Margie has been told by her boss that, if she does not "put out," she will never see that

promotion to manager that she wants. Explain what type of harassment this is and why it is that
type and not the other type discussed in the textbook.

What will be an ideal response?

Quid pro quo is a Latin phrase that basically means "You do something for me and I'll do
something for you." A supervisor who says or implies "If you want this promotion, you should
have sex with me" is obviously using his or her power as a boss to gain sexual favors in
exchange for something the employee wants. Thus, the scenario is a clear case of quid pro quo
harassment. In a hostile environment situation, an employee feels his or her rights are being
violated because of working conditions or offensive behavior on the part of other workers.
Hostile environments often have a sexual component, but can also emerge from issues of race,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, or general bullying—such as telling lewd or obscene stories or
jokes about members of the opposite sex, using degrading terms to describe coworkers, or
posting cartoons that degrade a person because of race or sexual orientation.
