Explain how mitochondrial DNA studies of Africans and Europeans support the replacement model for the evolution of modern humans.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary. A study of mitochondrial DNA performed several years ago showed that the mitochondrial DNA of Africans is more diverse than the mitochondrial DNA of the people in Europe (and the rest of the world). Since mitochondrial DNA has a constant rate of mutation, Africans should show greater diversity, since modern humans have existed the longest in Africa. The raw data indicates a closer genetic relationship among all Europeans than among Africans. This, too, supports the model.
