Discuss the reasons for the development of IPv6 to replace IPv4.

What will be an ideal response?

The Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) 32-bit IP address space created about 4 billion IP addresses which the developers thought at the time would last for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately the TCP/IP folks wasted huge chunks of IP addresses due to classful addressing and a generally easygoing, wasteful method of parceling out IP addresses. Second, the Internet reached a level of popularity way beyond the original developers' imaginations. The rate of consumption for IP addresses started to worry the Internet people and the writing was on the wall for IPv4's 32-bit addressing. As a result, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) developed the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) addressing system.
