Navigational keys are programmed as letters on the keyboard because vi was created when keyboards didn't have arrow keys. Assigning the letters h, j, k, and l might seem an odd choice because these letters don't seem related to left, down, up or right; however, because a typist's right hand is already on the j, k, and l keys, assigning commands to these letters made navigating without arrow keys easier.
