Give an example of how nonverbal communication can regulate conversation.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but students should focus on conversational turn-taking. Nonverbal communication can indicate someone’s desire to speak, for example, leaning forward. It can indicate that we want to keep speaking, for example, avoiding eye contact and keeping our vocal pattern consistent. We can use it to yield the conversation, usually by stopping, looking at the other person, and possibly making a motion with our hands to indicate it is okay for the other person to respond.
