Identify and describe the basic function of a gene

What will be an ideal response?

Composed of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), a gene usually provides information to code for a specific sequence of amino acids. During transcription, DNA codes for RNA (ribonucleic acid), which codes for amino acids during the process of translation. A long chain of amino acids is called a polypeptide chain, and one or more polypeptide chains form proteins such as digestive enzymes or hormones.
