What is engagement? How can teachers support high rates of engagement for students with ASD?
What will be an ideal response?
Strategies for supporting high rates of engagement for students with ASD are important.Engagement, or the time that students attend to and interact with the environment, is one of the best predictors of positive student outcomes (Iovannone et al., 2003). Engagement may require deliberate and careful planning, systematic use of materials, and capitalizing on student interest, and it may be possible to occur in one-on-one instruction, independent work time, or during group instruction (Iovannone et al., 2003). Ways to support active engagement includes PRT, and using preferred objects and natural reinforcers to increase motivation.Incorporating the child’s unique interests into instructional activities is also an effective method to enhance engagement in activities.
