Do predators control prey? Or do prey control predator populations? Explain your answer

What will be an ideal response?

The general public often thinks that predators control prey. In some cases this is not true. Predator/prey relationships are complex, and careful study needs to be conducted before conclusions are drawn. As the text states in cases such as the lynx/hare, interactions between the hare and its food source primarily control the hare population. When the food source dwindles the hare population decreases and the lynx numbers consequently drop. Recovery of the vegetation is followed by increases in prey and then predators. In this case the prey has a profound control over predator numbers. Insect predation studies, however, have shown that predators can control prey numbers.

As part of your independent study in field biology, you are sent to a small, inland sea. In one of your samples, you discover a small eel-like creature. It has a stiff, rod-shaped structure running the length of its dorsal side, with a line of nervous

tissue running along with it. You would begin the process of classifying this organism by placing it in phylum: A) Vertebrata. B) Cnidaria. C) Arthropoda. D) Mollusca. E) Chordata. Refer to the scenario below, and then answer the following question(s). As part of your independent study in field biology, you are sent to the seashore to take samples. In one of your samples, you discover a flexible, sessile creature. It looks somewhat plant-like, but then you notice a polyp that is producing medusa-like animals.
