Explain the sexual response cycle in males and females.
What will be an ideal response?
The sexual response cycle is similar in males and females. Both have four phases: excitation,
plateau, orgasm, and resolution.
1. Excitation—First stage of sexual arousal. Initiated by physical, visual, or mental stimuli. Sexual
organs are engorged due to increased blood flow—rigidity of male penis, increase in size of female
clitoris, lubrication, and secondary sex responses.
2. Plateau—Body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate increase. Penis and clitoris are
maximally rigid.
3. Orgasm—Muscles surrounding sex organs contract and release. Same happens for other body
parts. In males, this causes ejaculation; in females, ejaculate is contracted into the body. Ejaculation is
divided to two phases: emission and expulsion.
4. Resolution—Temperature, pressure, and heart rate go back to normal. In men, this phase
includes refractory period—unable to have another orgasm. Refractory period depends on a man’s age,
but it is also present in women, albeit much shorter.
