Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of center-based services. Do you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa? Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Advantages of center-based programs include the development of social skills for children who may not otherwise have gotten them in home-based programs. There is also the benefit of integrating children (where appropriate) with typically developing children. Other advantages include greater acess to services from specialists in a variety of areas, availability of specialized equipment and resources, enhanced efficiency of professionals’ time, and greater parental involvement and network opportunities. Disadvantages include cost of transportation and expenses related to maintaining facilities and equipment. Also, compared to home-based programs, there is less opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with parents. Students will most likely answer the final part of the question by stating that yes, the advantages outweigh the costs, perhaps mostly because it’s not reasonable to offer home-based services to all children, especially preschoolers and beyond where there are also established early special education programs being offered in other areas. In addition, research shows that where services are provided does not define the quality or effectiveness of an intervention program.
