Place a transparent specimen or a very thin shaving on a glass microscope slide. Gently add a drop of distilled water. Then position one end of a glass coverslip next to the specimen so that the rest of the slip is held at a 45° angle over the specimen. Slowly lower the coverslip with a dissecting needle so as not to trap air bubbles.
