Why do freshwater fish die in salt water
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Freshwater fish die in salt water because of osmosis. As two solutions, that have different concentrations, are separated by selectively permeable membranes, the molecules that are solvent spontaneously move. They move from the lower solute concentrations to the higher solute. This is done to reach an equal concentration on both sides of the membrane. So, if fresh water fish goes to salt water, the water will act as a hypertonic solution to the fish. The water, from the cytoplasm, will move out of the cell and the cell will shrink. This ultimately will result in the death of the fish
