Terry takes a drug classified as a proton-pump inhibitor to help his ulcer heal. Proton-pump inhibitors block the secretion of gastric acids. Predict and explain the effects of this drug on digestion in the stomach
What will be an ideal response?
Proton-pump inhibitors block the secretion of gastric acids. The initiation of protein digestion will be impaired while Terry takes this drug. Parietal cells in gastric glands in the stomach normally secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl). While taking this drug, the pH of Terry's stomach juices will be increase. An acidic pH is required to activate pepsinogen into an enzyme known as pepsin. Pepsin begins protein digestion in the stomach, but this process could be impaired during the time Terry takes this drug.
