Answer: Comte, who coined the term sociology, had three stages in his evolutionary model. These stages were meant to explain the development of society throughout history. These stages included the theological stage, the metaphysical stage and the positive stage. The theological stage refers to humans in their primitive state, explaining events through personified deities. First part fetishism- People worshiped inanimate objects such as trees and volcanoes. Second Part polytheism- use of many gods to explain events. Third part- monotheism attributes everything to one god. The metaphysical stage referred to explanations through abstract concepts. For example, Hindu principle of rebirth, migration of the soul etc. The positivity stage refers to scientific explanations based on observation experiment and comparison. Cause and effect relationships, purely intellectual way of looking at world.
