Describe the types of Network Management software (NMS) that are available.

NMS can be divided into two camps: proprietary tools made by the folks who make managed devices (OEM) and third-party tools. OEM tools are generally very powerful and easy to use, but only work on that OEM's devices. A number of third-party NMS tools are out there as well; you can even find some pretty good freeware NMS options. These tools are invariably harder to configure and must constantly be updated to try to work with as many devices as possible.
