The reasons for being placed in protective custody can be many, but some are more common: sexual harassment and/or pressure for sexual favors from other inmates; providing information to correctional or law enforcement officials; being an informant; being in debt to other inmates, usually through gambling of one sort or another; the type of crime that the offender committed prior to incarceration, such as with pedophiles; and having been previously employed in law enforcement or corrections.
