Explain the digital divide and analyze the impact it might have on some U.S. students.

What will be an ideal response?

The digital divide, a term coined by David Bolt in 2000 in a book of the same name, is “the gap between those with regular, effective access to digital technologies and those without” (p. 17). On one side of the divide, people have easy access to technological resources and know how to use them. On the other side, people have substantially less access, less experience, and correspondingly less knowledge about how to use the technology. The distinction is not only between those who have computer access at home and those who do not. The digital divide also refers to the quality of hardware, software, and connectivity that is available to users across social classes. Who are those with less technological access and experience? Families living below the poverty line rarely have computers and broadband connections in their homes. Students living in poverty are twice as likely as other students to access the Internet at school only.
