The ABC model of depression explains the emergence of gender difference in depression during adolescence. The ABC model is a vulnerability-stress model. That is, people carry with them different levels of vulnerability to depression. In the presence of stress, those with high vulnerability are likely to become depressed. Someone who does not have high levels of vulnerability might encounter the same stress and not become depressed. The A, B, and C stand for three categories of factors that make someone vulnerable to depression: affective, biological, and cognitive.
