Discuss why foot pursuits increase the risk of injury to police officers.
What will be an ideal response?
Officers are at an elevated risk of injury when engaging in a foot pursuit. Foot pursuits in low visibility conditions, over uneven terrain, and climbing fences all pose risks for police officers. In addition, foot pursuits may allow suspects the opportunity to ambush officers while entering houses or turning blind corners. As such, many departments have strict policies limiting foot pursuits, and officers are routinely trained on to turn corners widely to limit their exposure and risk of injury.
