Health care professionals should be sensitive to both the patient's cultural background and to the language barrier, if applicable. Patients from other cultures may have different beliefs about and experiences with health care; some may have had little or no formal health care in the past. In some cultures, admission to a hospital indicates that the patient's condition is hopeless. Health care professionals should take care to explain medical procedures to the patient and to address any questions the patient has.
Patients with a limited understanding of English may have difficulty explaining their symptoms or providing a medical history to medical personnel. Likewise, they may not understand the information health care professionals give to them. If possible, a translator who speaks the patient's native language should be called in to assist.
