Why should we be concerned about violence occurring in prisons between inmates?

What will be an ideal response?

Even in prison, citizens can exercise certain constitutional rights. One is the right against cruel and unusual punishment in the 8th Amendment. When one is sentenced to prison for wrongdoing, the sentence does not include subjecting to murder, rape, or assault. The government is responsible for individuals in their custody and to see they are free from physical harm during the time they serve their sentence. In 2003, the Congress passed the Prison Rape Reduction Act which articulated wardens' responsibility to reduce sexual assaults in jails and prisons. We also need to be concerned as the majority of prisoners are released. Individuals who have been raped in prison will come back to society with myriad of mental and physical health problems. Overall, it is a violation of human rights and personal dignity afforded to every citizen.
