Disconformities exist between parallel layers of sedimentary rocks, and consequently, are hard to identify. What
geologic process must occur for an unconformity to develop? What is one way to identify a disconformity, other than
numerical dating? What will be an ideal response?
Unconformities develop due to erosion, periods of non-deposition, or a combination.
Disconformities can be identified easily by comparing the fossil assemblages above and
below the unconformity. In all likelihood, the fossil assemblages will be different due to the
elapsed time.
