Making explicit reference to the dual pathway model of emotions, distinguish the unconscious and conscious components of emotional experience. Be sure to note the relevant brain areas involved in each aspect of our emotional experience.
What will be an ideal response?
Joseph LeDoux suggested that the brain uses two different pathways for processing emotions. The low road is largely unconscious and is consistent with the James-Lange theory that arousal occurs before the feeling of the emotion. The unconscious emotional system is largely located in the limbic system and involves the input of the amygdala. Another part of the unconscious response is the sympathetic nervous system. It releases stress hormones into the system and prepares you for fight or flight. The high road involves conscious thought and arises from your appraisal of the situation. The high road is more like the two-factor theory. This cognitive appraisal occurs in the cortex of the brain. Finally, like the Cannon-Bard theory, the dual pathway model suggests that a triggering event simultaneously leads to bodily changes and the experience of emotion.
