Known to cause an inflammatory bowel disease referred to as Johne's disease in cattle, sheep, and goats, which organism has been isolated from the bowel mucosa of patients with Crohn dis-ease?

a. M. paratuberculosis
b. M. avium-intracellulare
c. Mycobacterium phlei
d. Mycobacterium lepraemurium

A
M. paratuberculosis (M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis) is known to cause an inflammatory bo-wel disease referred to as Johne's disease in cattle, sheep, and goats. This organism was also iso-lated from the bowel mucosa of patients with Crohn disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel dis-ease of humans. Whether these and other mycobacteria actually contribute to the development of Crohn disease or are simply colonizing an environmental niche in the bowel of these patients remains to be elucidated.
