What is the Role of Gunshot Residue?

What will be an ideal response?

For decades, gunshot residue (GSR) has been considered evidence that a specific person fired a handgun. But in recent years, GSR has been somewhat discredited and its usefulness limited, if not disregarded.
GSR is composed of extremely tiny particles that can be easily removed from the skin. For example, all the shooter has to do is wash his or her hands thoroughly; also, normal human movement and activity can remove the particles as well.
