Discuss how terrorist organizations are financed. Give examples.
What will be an ideal response?
Terrorist organizations are financed in a variety of ways. For example:
1. Drug Smuggling: Although the illegal drug trade has been around for centuries, recently much attention has been given to the link between the illegal drug trade and terrorism. The term narco-terrorism has been used to define this linkage.
2. Arms Smuggling: In addition to being buyers of weapons on the international market, terrorist groups may use their knowledge of drugs or other types of smuggling routes to sell arms to anyone with the requisite cash.
3. Credit Card Fraud and Theft: For example, in 2004, the French government announced that it had detected ten suspected Islamic militants who were stealing more than $100,000 a month from ATM-accessed accounts in several European countries.
4. Charities Fraud and Linkages: During the past 20 years alone, several groups (including HAMAS, Hizbollah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and al-Qaeda) have used a variety of charities, educational think tanks, and religious studies programs to raise tens of millions of dollars.
