Explain what you learned about the nervous system and the ways it interacts with other dimensions of human behavior. Cite examples of what you learned from the case study of Cheryl and the impact of biology on her life situation.
What will be an ideal response?
The case of Cheryl discusses her reaction to losing her legs below the knee during military service, as well as the impact of a traumatic brain injury on her behavior. Symptoms that appeared to her friends and family to mimic depression and disinterest were not psychologically based, but actually had an organic cause, due to damage to Cheryl's frontal cortex, the part of the brain that controls affect. Cheryl's social worker referred her for neurological and neuropsychological testing due to her experience working with people with TBI. A long time could have been spent with Cheryl in therapy without looking at potential physical causes for the issue, and that time and expense could have been frustrating and difficult for her and her social worker. The central nervous system is really responsible for our emotions and behavior, so any factor that impacts the central nervous system can impact the client's behavior and affect.
