Using examples from the chapter, discuss how researchers have re-framed the issue of the ideal family.

What will be an ideal response?

Many researchers are turning the conversation around to ask whether the nuclear family is really the best family model for all families. Some of the supporting evidence they give to support the need for reconsideration include the legality of marital rape in most states until the 1980s and the high interpersonal violence rates present within marriage. Throughout history there are examples of the marital bond being legally used to keep women subordinate and stuck within harmful emotional and physical situations. This situation is further illustrated by recent marriage promotion programs. Due to issues such as the marriage squeeze, it is not always financially beneficial for a woman to be married.
