How are whole class literacy experiences used within a core literacy program?

Core literacy programs usually have an expectation of whole class reading because text is provided for every member of the class. What many programs do not provide are explicit instructions on how you are to proceed with that shared reading experience. It is up to you to see the needs of the students and then meet those needs with the tools that have been provided. Some approaches are more effective than others. The writing expectations and components of most core literacy programs are not extensive. Sometimes the writing component is as limited as providing a writing prompt associated with the story the children read. Often teachers who assign students to write about the prompts require each student to do so independently and students usually do so in one draft. There is no reason for this ineffective pattern. Students and their teacher can write to the prompt together and complete the entire writing process including revising, editing, and publishing.
