Discuss the potential negative side effects associated with hot spot policing.
What will be an ideal response?
While generally accepted as “effective,” hot spot policing may have several negative side effects. First, it may negatively affect citizen’s perceptions of police as citizens begin to feel “targeted” by police. Next, it may lead to criticisms of over-policing in the communities that are the target of the hot spot policing, and under-policing in areas where police have less of a presence because they are dedicating more resources to hot spot areas.
