Describe the importance of diversity of staff for correctional agencies

Staff diversity is important to the operation of correctional agencies. Having a staff that is diverse in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity is important because with such a large percentage of offenders under correctional supervision being minorities, race and ethnic diversity aid in the management of prisons and community correctional agencies. The disproportionate representation of minority offenders makes it even more important that correctional agencies aggressively recruit minority staff in order to have the staff be somewhat representative of the offender makeup. As well, diversity of staff enriches and develops all staff as they continuously learn from each other. Race and ethnicity is not always a barrier to effective communication between inmates and staff. However, a diverse work-force reduces the perception by offenders that the system is racist and that they therefore have an excuse to commit crimes, misbehave or not follow prison or community supervision rules.
