Institutional: political, religious, and civil obstacles that prevent gay parents from having full or half custody of their children and prevent stepfathers from becoming legally recognized and being able to stay at their own homes. Institutional factors also contribute to children’s negatives views of their fathers and their partners.
b. Interpersonal: the relationship of the gay parent with his ex-spouse and children. Heterosexism in religions and society can encourage children to feel embarrassed or ashamed of being part of a gay family. Putting a boundary between father and child and partner can cause a loss of respect and devaluing of the gay relationship.
