What is the theory of first effective settlement and how does it help to explain the residual impacts of the English settlers at Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay Colony on North American cultural landscapes?
What will be an ideal response?
The student should know that the Theory of First Effective Settlement, postulated by the geographer Wilbur Zelinsky, states that groups who successfully settled a place first had the longest impact. Jamestown and Massachusetts Bay Colony were both settlements created by British companies. Their impacts can be seen in the architecture of the areas, as well as the dominance of the English in the United States. More subtly, the fact that business interests were primary concerns in these early settlements continued as these settlement became centers of industry and trade.
