Differentiate between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation using examples.

What will be an ideal response?

The answer should contain the following points:

Cognitive approaches to motivation suggest that motivation is the outcome of people's thoughts, beliefs, expectations, and goals. Cognitive theories of motivation draw a key distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation causes people to participate in an activity for their own enjoyment rather than for any actual or concrete reward that it will bring them. In contrast, extrinsic motivation causes people to do something for money, a grade, or some other actual, concrete reward.
For example, Ava is a general surgeon who works long hours at the hospital because she loves medicine. It is likely that intrinsic motivation is prompting Ava. However, if Ava works hard to make a lot of money, then it is likely that extrinsic motivation underlies her efforts. Similarly, if Roger studies genetics because he loves the subject and finds it interesting, he is being guided by intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, if all he cares about is the grade he gets in the course, he is being guided by extrinsic motivation.
