What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a switch to perform routing functions?

What will be an ideal response?

Most switches use circuit-based logic or an ASIC chip to provide fast algorithm-based processing. Switches generally do not have the same programming and setup flexibility as routers, but they are easier to set up and administer, reducing the training load on the network administrator. Layer 3 and Layer 4 switches perform the same functions as routers, but, because they don't have the same configuration flexibility, they must be carefully selected to match the networking application.
