All screenings and assessments used with English language learners must be culturally appropriate, considering children's cultural knowledge and preferred ways for processing and interacting with their world. Assessment tools must also be linguistically appropriate, considering the child's language when selecting instruments. Translations of English-language instruments must be free of linguistic and cultural bias before being used with young English language learners. Translations need to focus on more than a word-for-word translation by including attention to the contexts in which children learn.
