Koalas are slow-moving animals with a mass that is over half digestive tract. And yet they have overreproduced to the point where they are endangering the habitat of certain protected preserves in Australia. How have koalas managed to survive competition with animals that are faster and can eat a greater variety of foods?

Koalas eat something (eucalyptus leaves) almost nothing else wants. It's even a rare insect who will touch eucalyptus. Thus koalas have a food source for which there is little or no competition. They are vulnerable to predators, especially human ones, but in national parks, few natural predators are left, humans can't hunt them, and suggestions that the excess koalas be culled are met with outrage. Unprotected koalas in the wild are endangered.
