How was the sense of collective identity in France established and retained?

What will be an ideal response?

Louis's administrative changes had a lot to do with streamlining the efficiency of the state and making people aware that they were subjects of the Sun King. However, many in France felt that he was a good king and bought into the idea that he was the representative of God, particularly when he enforced not only Catholicism under his "one king, one faith, one law" policy, but also enforced French Catholicism over the dictates of the pope. His collection of taxes to maintain a strong army made people in France feel protected. In the years of war and devastating famine, Louis appealed directly to the common people of France for help, and was therefore seen as being truly involved in solving this crisis and unifying France. Louis XIV's regulation of religious affairs, his control of the French nobility, his efficient royal administration of tax and economic policies, and his establishment of better working relations with his subjects all promoted a growing sense of national unity, exemplifying French royal absolutism in action.
