Three mechanisms can help a listener determine whether a sound is on the right or left. First, phase differences apply to low frequencies; this refers to the degree to which the sound arrives at different times at each ear. Intensity differences will also exist, such that the ear closest to the sound will receive a higher intensity than the ear farthest from the sound. Finally, analysis of timbre refers to the degree that the folded shape of the pinna affects the waves. Depending on how the wave hits the ear, the folds will affect the waves differently.
