How important are conventions when children are writing in a developmental journal?

What will be an ideal response?

In developmental journals, children feel free to simply express themselves, and this freedom can be diminished if the children are expecting you to correct or fix everything. The temporary spelling they use in journal writing is for their own benefit as writers; children need to trust that these attempts are not meant to be published or displayed publically and that they will not be criticized. When writing is ready to be shared as a final draft, you can help children revise the writing into a conventional form for the benefit of readers. A developmental journal is for the writer. If shared, developmental journal writing is read aloud by the reader or shared just with a few trusted adults.
