Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the Persian Empire
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal answer should include:
a. An obvious strength is military leadership and skill, which enabled the Persians to conquer lands in Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.
b. Persian rulers developed means to govern the empire effectively. The construction of a system of roads connected the different parts of the empire. The division of the empire into satrapies improved government administration.
c. Another strength was the policy toward subjects. As long as subjects accepted Persian political leadership, people were free to follow their own religion and decide local affairs.
d. The adoption of Zoroastrianism as the official religion provided Persian rulers with a religious rationale for their political rule and wars of conquest.
e. A weakness was that imperial ambitions led to defeat in the Persian Wars. Persian naval strength was weaker than Greek, especially Athenian, naval power.
