Describe what is meant by the phrase, "intellectual disability is a socially constructed condition."
What will be an ideal response?
Intellectual disability may not be a trait residing in the individual but a product of the interaction between a person and his or her environment. Before the inclusion of "adaptive skills" in the definition of intellectual disabilities, many more individuals were classified as having intellectual disabilities based on their scores on intelligence tests alone. So, many individuals who had once been "intellectually disabled" no longer are. In countries where reading and technology are not as important as our own, "mild" intellectual disabilities may not even exist.
