Answer: Vasoconstriction or dilation of arterioles can control blood flow to specific tissues. This can be controlled in many ways. For example, with exercising muscle, a fall in local oxygen level and pH, and a rise in local CO2 level due to metabolic activity of the muscle will cause vasodilation. The sympathetic nervous system can cause vasoconstriction of blood flow to the gut during exercise, and can cause dilation of blood flow to the skin if the body is overheating. Many hormones, such as epinephrine, angiotensin II, vasopressin affect vasoconstriction/dilation more generally, and these are important in blood pressure regulation.
