Compare and contrast two of the following theories of emotion: the James-Lange theory, the Cannon-Bard theory, and the Schachter-Singer theory. Illustrate each theory with concrete examples.

What will be an ideal response?

The James-Lange theory states that emotions register in your brain after physiological changes in your body. As an example, a barking dog charges you and you feel scared because you are trembling. The Cannon-Bard theory states that the changes in your body happen at the same time as your emotional experience. As an example, you see a person enter a store with a gun and that information goes to your thalamus, which simultaneously sends messages to your brain triggering both the emotional experience of fear and the trembling of your body. Schachter and Singer's theory argues that both the physiological arousal and a cognitive label are required before an emotion is registered. So it is similar to the James-Lange theory in that bodily arousal is experienced before emotion, but arousal is followed by a cognitive thought that labels the emotion.
