The first level is intimate distance – this is reserved for people with whom you are very close.
The distance is from touching to 1 foot. The second level, 1 to 2 feet, is personal distance – the
typical distance between two people shaking hands. Generally speaking, we allow friends into
this area of space. The third level is social distance – reserved for coworkers and
acquaintances. This distance – 3 to 5 feet – allows people to have conversations, but allows you
to maintain a safe distance. The fourth level is 5 feet or more. This is a "public" distance
maintained in public speaking and formal settings.
