As with most measurement-related skills, performing operations with customary units is more difficult than performing operations with metric units. The differences arise in problems that require renaming. Since the metric system uses a base-10 place value system, renaming presents no problems. Students merely apply the renaming skills they learned previously in decimal instruction. However, when working with customary units, there is not a consistent base to use when renaming. For example, the base for pounds is 16 (16 ounces in one pound); for feet, 12 (12 inches in one foot). Students must be taught to use these bases rather than base 10 for problems that require renaming.
