The ideal answer should include:
1. Early Colonial Period: Immigrants came primarily from England and from Africa in the form of slavery.
2. 1820-1885: Northern and western Europe, Chinese
3. 1885-1945: Southern and Eastern Europe, Mexico Nativist feelings; quotas (not a destination for persons fleeing Nazi Germany)
4. Post WWII-1968: At end of War Congress agreed to admit 185,000 per year, mostly Europeans. Very small number given the need.
5. Since 1968: Emphasis on family unification, Vietnam and Cambodia, Cubans, Haitians
